Our New Local School

As a mum and the beneficiary of a great education, I know the number one investment we can make for our future and our kids’ future is a great education.

That is why I’ll always work and fight for great schools for our local kids.

We have great schools here in South Brisbane, but I also know that they are under pressure from population growth – I see it and know it and you also tell me!

Because I’m a local parent and your local member, I am determined that our investment in local schools keeps pace with growth.  That’s why in last year’s budget, I ensured $10.75 million was allocated to West End State School (WESS) to build more classrooms for a growing student population.

That’s also why I am so proud to announce that our Labor Government will deliver two brand new inner city high schools, including one right here in South Brisbane.  I have also ensured that WESS has room to further grow by securing the Queensland Police facility on Vulture Street so the school can realise the WESS Building Our Future Master Plan (more info here). Other local investments include refurbishments at Greenslopes State School, East Brisbane State School, Dutton Park State School and Narbethong State Special School.

I have secured funding to ensure options and planning work starts now.  I will also ensure that Education Queensland establishes a local reference group of representatives from school communities in South Brisbane to ensure our new high school reflects our community needs.

The last time a government built a school in the inner city was in the early 1960s. Much has changed since then.  I’m determined that we make the most of this incredible opportunity to deliver a great local school and a legacy social infrastructure project.
