I have lived in the South Brisbane electorate for 40 years. I grew up in East Brisbane, attending St Joseph’s Primary School at Kangaroo Point.
My parents owned and ran the fruit shop in Woolloongabba and, together with my husband, I am now raising my two kids in West End.
As a second generation Lebanese migrant, I was proud to be the first person from my family to go to university. I appreciate the value of a good education and have worked as a public servant in areas of education and disability policy.
I was honoured to be elected to the Queensland Parliament on 28 April 2012 as the Member for South Brisbane. I am also proud to serve Queenslanders as the Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships.
If there is ever anything I can do to assist, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
About South Brisbane
South Brisbane is Queensland’s oldest electorate, having been the only one of the original 16 districts to have been contested at every state election. Bordered by the mighty Brisbane River it encompasses South Brisbane, West End, Woolloongabba, Highgate Hill, East Brisbane, Kangaroo Point, Buranda, Dutton Park, Stones Corner and parts of Greenslopes and Coorparoo.
South Brisbane is a vibrant community that boasts Queensland’s best art and cultural institutions and many a festival is celebrated locally. We have outstanding schools and hospitals, excellent arts and produce markets, innovative small business hubs, and some of Brisbane’s best cafes and restaurants.
However, most of all, we have a wonderful sense of community – of looking out for each other and celebrating our individuality, our diversity and the Aboriginal heritage of our local area.
Treasurer of Queensland
As the Treasurer of Queensland, I am responsible for the financial management of the Palaszsczuk Government, and shaping our economy in order to improve the wellbeing of all Queenslanders. I am very proud to be the third woman to hold the role of Treasurer in Queensland.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships
As the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (ATSIP), I oversee policy relating to, and coordination and delivery of services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders: supporting remote ATSIP communities, preserving cultural heritage and working to close the gap.
